Desert Night and Morning Realities
Our second night camping deep in the Arizona desert turned out to be an unforgettable experience. Sleeping out in the open air beneath a canopy of brilliant stars, we were treated to a breathtaking, crystal-clear view of the Milky Way stretching across the night sky.
Of course, outdoor desert camping also brought a few rustic firsts for us. Navigating the outdoor earth closet facility was quite a novelty and a bit of a challenge, as we are certainly not used to such primitive toilet setups back home!
Waking up around 6:00 AM, we immediately felt the warm air already settling over the desert landscape. We originally planned to take a morning walk after breakfast, but the scorching heat of the rising sun quickly made us change our minds. Instead, we packed up our gear, dismantled our tents, and opted for the comfortable air-conditioning of the car to experience the valley.
Monument Valley: A Journey Through Time
We embarked on the famous 18-mile scenic drive loop through Monument Valley, located within the Navajo Nation Reservation.
- History & Landscape: For generations, this sacred land has been home to the Navajo people, who traditionally refer to the area as Tsé Biiʼ Ndzisgaii (Valley of the Rocks). The towering red sandstone monoliths, buttes, and spires—sculpted by millions of years of wind and water erosion—have become the ultimate cinematic symbol of the American West, famously featured in countless classic Western films directed by John Ford.
- Our Experience: Cruising through the valley on our two-hour drive, we were utterly spellbound by the sheer scale and dramatic forms of formations like the iconic Mittens and John Ford’s Point. It was a humbling reminder of the raw, artistic power of nature.
Driving to the Grand Canyon
Leaving the crimson deserts behind, we set our sights on one of the ultimate natural wonders of the world: the Grand Canyon.
- The Drive: The nearly three-hour drive across the high desert was long and a bit tiresome, but Steven and I shared driving duties, taking turns behind the wheel to keep us moving safely.
- First Impressions: When we finally arrived and caught our first glimpse of the Grand Canyon, its massive, layered crimson abysses and majestic scale left us completely lost for words. No photograph can truly prepare you for the sheer depth and grandeur of the canyon walls.
After soaking in that initial panoramic view, we drove to our campground to set up camp for the evening. We are planning to stay right here at the Grand Canyon for the next two days to fully explore its trails and viewpoints before our journey eventually leads us onward to the bright lights of Las Vegas.
